1814

Governor Macquarie's establishes the Native Institution at Parramatta. This school's for local Indigenous Australian children. It closes in 1820 when families get their children out of the school, after they realize that the schools aim is to separate Indigenous children from families and communities.

1944

2 October, Education Gazette, NSW, states "children of any Aborigine securing an Exemption Certificate are to be admitted to the ordinary public school"

1949

Australian Citizenship Act gives Indigenous Australians the right to vote in Commonwealth elections if they are enrolled for State elections or have served in the Armed Forces.

Aboriginal children need a medical certificate to attend public schools.

1915

The NSW Aborigines Protection Board is given powers to remove Aboriginal children without a court hearing.

1961

December, the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies is formed in Canberra.

1926

Following the killing of a European in Dala, Western Australia, 11 Aboriginal people are murdered by police.

1912

Maternity Allowance is introduced but does not include Aboriginal people.

1962

All Indigenous people are given the right to vote in Commonwealth elections.

1964

Northern Territory Legislative Council passes legislation removing discrimination against Indigenous Australians.

1909 -10

NSW introduces The NSW Aborigines Act because of the crisis in public schools. Aboriginal schools are established in NSW during the early part of the 20th century. Followed by requests from the European community, Aboriginal children were excluded from public schools.

1965

Integration Policy is introduced, meaning Aboriginal people are supposed to have more control over their life and society.

1908

The Old Age Pension Act was for all Australians except Aboriginal people.

1804

Two years after the British flag is raised in Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) settlers are told to shoot Indigenous Australians.

1985

Uluru handed back to traditional owners.

1972

Tent Embassy was established outside Parliament House. It has the Indigenous flag.

1901

Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Indigenous Australians are excluded from the census and from the law-making powers of the Commonwealth Parliament.

Indigenous people are excluded from voting, employment in post offices, enlistment in Armed Forces, and maternity allowance.

1997

The report of the Stolen Generations, is released. It recommends a national sorry day to remember the history and effects of removing children from their families.
