Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome

What does it effect?

  • Cardiovascular system

(Due to constricting the airways and by keeping to much carbon dioxide in your body)

  • Your Breathing (Due to over time air passages basically shrink.)
  • everyday activities (Due to as airways get smaller you get shorter of breath easier and quicker)

Symptoms

Tests

How to Tell

causes

Treatment

Possible Complications

  • Arterial Blood Gas (measures the acidity (pH) and the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood from an artery.)
  • Chest x-ray (image taken showing the inside of a body part)
  • CT scan (A computed tomography (CT) scan uses X-rays to make detailed pictures of structures inside of the body.)
  • Pulmonary Functions Tests (an assessment of the respiratory system that provides information about ventilation, airflow, lung volumes and capacity, and the diffusion of gas incorporating spirometry, peak flow meters, and the body plethysmograph.)
  • Sleep Study (A sleep study or polysomnogram (PSG) is a test that electronically transmits and records specific physical activities while you sleep. )
  • Usually Overweight
  • Cyanosis (when skin turns a bluish purple color due to lack of blood and oxygen in an area or body part)
  • Reddish colored skin
  • right sided heart failure (When right side of the heart collapses and stops working)
  • Daytime Sleepiness
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Noninvasive mechanical ventilation
  • Tracheostomy (When a hole is put in the trachea to help open another airway to allow someone to breathe better)
  • Oxygen

Bibliography

  • Depression/Irritability (due to inability to do everyday activity's which leads to lack of social life)
  • Increased risk of accidents (due to a more constant state of light headedness and being shaky or weak)
  • Sexual Dysfunction (Due to not being able to have the energy needed to have sexual intercourse because of using so much energy to breathe)

The exact cause of OHS is unknown. Believed that it happens due to a brain defect.
