Sands Key

Soldier Key gets its name from when it was used as a camp for men. This island is mostly not used and untouched. The key is mostly covered with shrubs, grass, and mangroves.

History of Biscayne Bay Reserve

Ragged Keys

Ragged Keys are located just north of the upper Florida Keys, also located just north of Sand Key. Some earlier names for Ragged Keys are "Knox Island", "Laurence Island", "Los Paradisos", "Mascaras", and four more.

Biscayne Bay Reserve was established on June 28, 1980. Ninety-five percent of the bay is water, and the shore of the bay is the location of a huge mangrove forest. Five thousand years ago, when sea level was about 20 feet lower than today, there was no Biscayne Bay. Biscayne Bay formed as sea level rose to fill a depression in the limestone between 5,000 and 2,400 years ago.
