Natural Resources of Alabama

Highland Rim

The Highland Rim is a region with a large source of limestone deposits.

In this region corn, soybeans and cotton are farmed.

Some of Alabama's cattle ranches are found in this region.

Cumberland Plateau

This region was a huge source of coal mining in the early 19th century.

Methane is also an important economic resource in the Cumberland Plateau. A by-product of coal formation, methane gas accumulates in and around the coal beds and is thus called coalbed methane. The gas is extracted from several areas in the Warrior Basin, mainly in Tuscaloosa, Walker and Jefferson counties.

Both sandstone and limestone can be found in this region.

Appalachian Ridge

and Valley

  • This region is comprised of sandstone ridges and fertile limestone valleys.
  • The three ingredients for steel manufacture, coal, iron ore, and limestone are found in abundance in this area.
  • Some of Alabama's fruit farms and hogs are grown and raised in this region.

Piedmont Upland

  • Coal, iron ore, limestone, and marble are found in this area of Alabama along with Cheaha Mountain, Alabama's highest point.
  • Cotton plantations were also found in this region.
  • Cattle ranches and chicken are raised here.

East Gulf Coastal Plain

  • Oil and gas are two of the natural resources found in this region.
  • Long leaf pine forests support forestry
  • Large cotton plantations were found here.
  • This region holds many of Alabama's catfish and pecan farms.
  • This region is the heart of Alabama's seafood industry.
