How to Handle a Picky Eater

What is a picky eater?

What is Meal Time?

“Picky” eating is when a child (or adult) refuses foods often or eats the same foods over and over.

  • Picky eating usually peaks in the toddler and preschool years. Many parents worry that their picky eater is not getting enough nutrition to grow. But in reality they are actually eating more than you think!

Meals are more than just food, it's a time for you to contact with your child and support their overall development. Talk to your child during meal time and make sure they are not eating alone

I would like to know .....

- child's picky eating behavior

Try this at home:

  • Does your child eat the same kinds of food every meal?
  • Is your child refusing to eat?
  • Does your child have sensitivity to food texture?

ARTS AND CRAFTS: Design meal calendars with sections for what the child can do for the meal with fun stickers and colors

Never force your child to eat - forcing will usually lead to less eating

Provide a pleasant and relaxing meal time for you child, along with a healthy meal

Never make deals with your children when eating - "if you eat your vegetables you can have dessert"

Try this at home:

Take what we've talked about this session and try it at home

Create a meal and snack time routine

Incorporate new healthy foods next to foods you know your child already likes

Discussion:

How to Encourage Exploration with Foods

Do as I Do

  • Bring child to the grocery store - let them pick out the produce
  • Have 1 day in the week as family ( spanish,,, night
  • Allow them to help make dinner and other meals

Children are extremely observant - If you eat a variety of healthy foods, your child is more likely to follow you.

Serve a variety of colorful but healthy foods

Make meal time fun, like serving breakfast for dinner or cutting foods into different shapes with cookie cutters

BE CREATIVE! - Add chopped broccoli or green peppers to spaghetti sauce, top cereal with fruit slices, or Add them to backed goods, or mix grated zucchini and carrots into casseroles and soups, add dips for veggies.
