To further discuss the flood archetype, this presentation will compare and contrast the myths of the flood in the Hebrew Bible's Book of Genesis and the Mesopotamian Religion's Epic of Gilgamesh.
An archetype is a mythic theme or character in a culture's mythologies that can be found patterned within other cultures' myths (Thury, Devinney, 2017)
Myths throughout time have had representations of archetypes within the stories that are passed down from different cultures.
The archetype discussed in this presentation is the flood. It is a destructive force in myths that bring about a new world once the damage has been done.
The flood in both Genesis and Gilgamesh are caused by the wrong doings of the people from the time period. The culture's God is displeased and so punishes them. In both myths, there is a man who is saved from the destruction by being instructed to construct a vessel, who in turns saves certain people and/or creatures. Also, in both myths, the vessel comes to rest on a mountain of sorts, and a new race comes to follow behind the people who were saved.
