THE PANGU CREATION MYTH

Connections to other myths

Where it comes from

The Pangu creation myth has a connection with the Hindu creation because it was one thing that split up into different things in the world.

Many other myths also started with chaos.

Who was Pangu?

The pangu creation myth origins from China, and is based on a chinese culture

Xu Zheng was the first writer that was able to record this myth during the Three Kingdoms period.

To keep Yin and Yang separated, Pangu stood in between them and pushed as hard as he could every day. It took him 18,000 years to get the sky and earth separated.

After the 18,000 years Pangu had died.

Different myths say different things. One myth says that Pangu was a hairy giant that had horns on his head and fur on his body. Whereas, other myths say Pangu was a creation from heaven that had a head of a dog and the body of a human.

After he died, his body parts became a very important part of this world.

Pangu's breath became the wind, mist and clouds. His voice became thunder, left eye became the sun and the right eye was the moon. His head became the mountains, and his blood became the rivers.

How it started

Goddess Nuwa

There was nothing except chaos in the world. The chaos had formed into a cosmic egg. The opposite principles of yin and yang became balanced, which lead to the emerging of Pangu.

Yin being the murky earth, and yang being the sky.

Pangu began to create the world. He began to swing his giant axe that created the earth. Pangu separated Yin and Yang.

Goddess Nuwa was the traditional chinese goddess who used clay to form humans. She was best known for creating mankind and repairing the wall of heaven. The humans she created were smart and individually crafted. One on top of the other. At one point, Goddess Nuwa got bored and began to create more and more humans, therefore leading to the human population
