LGBTQ Cultural Competency and Sensitivity

According to the 2013 National Transgender Discrimination Survey:

  • Discrimination was pervasive against transgender people
  • The combination of anti-transgender bias and persistent, structural racism was devastating
  • People of color in general fare worse than white participants across the board
  • African American transgender participants fare worse than all others in the many areas examined
  • 19% reported having been refused a home or apartment
  • 11% reported being evicted because of their gender identity/expression
  • One-fifth (19%) reported experiencing homelessness at some point in their lives because they were transgender
  • The majority of those trying to access a homeless shelter were harassed by shelter staff or residents (55%)
  • 29% were turned away altogether
  • 22% were sexually assaulted by residents or staff
  • Almost 2% of respondents were currently homeless, which is almost twice the rate of the general population (1%)

Underground Work for Income

The rampant discrimination that transgender community faces threatens the possibility of job security. Some transgender people are forced into, or elect to be involved with, underground (illegal) work for income. This can include sex work, or selling drugs.

Tools for Being A Better Ally

Talk to the LGBTQ community about their experiences

Remember that SEX ≠ GENDER ≠ SEXUAL ORIENTATION

It is inappropriate to ask transgender patients about their genital status if it is unrelated to their care.

Welcome LGBTQ people by getting the word out about your services and displaying LGBTQ-positive cues in your office.

Take the time to research the issues

ALWAYS refer to a transgender person by the name and pronoun that corresponds with their gender identity.

Never disclose a person’s transgender status to anyone who does not explicitly need the information for care.

Allyship: Language Matters!

Allyship: Making Room at the Table

  • Trans/Transgender is an ADJECTIVE, not a noun or an adverb.
  • Transgender people is used instead of transgenders or transgendered
  • Always ask, never assume pronouns
  • “What are your gender pronouns?”
  • The label “transsexual” is used less and less these days
  • Language has evolved
  • “Tranny” is an offensive term
  • ONLY USE THE LANGUAGE THAT THE TRANS PERSON USES TO DESCRIBE THEMSELVES
