  • Is very easily influenced by his father and brother
  • But, has conflicting thoughts
  • Caught in a never ending struggle between traditional familial values and ideas of identity versus progressive ideas and having a more complex awareness of one's identity
  • Death plays a huge role in Jawad's life decisions and emotions

Jawad's Father

"I was astonished by father's ability to return to the normal rhythm of life so easily each time after he washed as if nothing had happened." (pg. 22)

  • He values tradition and culture above all else
  • Sacrifices emotional experiences with his family to maintain the integrity of his profession as a corpse washer
  • Although a strong, hardworking man, Jawad's father is strongly affected by his son Ameer's death

Raid Ismael

  • Helped Jawad gain a new found confidence in his passion for art
  • Characteristically opposite of Jawad's father
  • He represented the best of Ameer, Jawad's brother, while at the same time being a role model for Jawad and a support system
