Let's talk about

Thank

you

RED

It is a process of introducing an idea that later influences a response to a secondary idea, rippling into a vast network of associated ideas. This process happens in a non-conscious way.

  • Priming
  • What is cultural priming?
  • How have researchers studied the effects of cultural priming?
  • Why is it important to me?
  • Why is it relevant to you?

CULTURAL PRIMING

It is presenting individuals with an idea to make them act or feel or even think like people from a certain culture.

CHANGES IN:

Why is cultural priming important to me?

LANGUAGE USE

If a person identifies with American culture then there's a tendency to use words like "I" "mine" "self" individualistic words

1. Having strong cultural ties to both Guatemalan and American identities, I want to understand why I feel, behave or think the way I do in a particular situation.

2. Because I have bi-racial, bi-cultural children I want to be able to understand them and support them as they discover their place in the world.

3. Studies show that bi-cultural individuals who are conflicted with regards to their thoughts, feelings or actions tend to isolate themselves from both cultures.

If a person identifies with non-American culture then there's a tendency to use words like "we" "our" "together" collective words

Why is it relevant to you?

  • America is becoming more diverse
  • People with different cultural backgrounds have migrated to the U.S. and are growing in numbers
  • There are more Interracial/ bi-cultural couples
  • Awareness that people's culture determines their behaviors in a situation, may help break down some cultural barriers
  • If you are bi-cultural it may provide you with some answers as to why you behave, feel or think the way you do.

Research Studies

CULTURAL PRIMING

EFFECTS

  • Bi-cultural individuals are chosen for the studies.
  • Experiments are created to test individual's BII bi-cultural identity integration versus conflicting.
  • Do individuals identify or dis-identify from the cultural norm being primed.
  • Researchers manipulate the variable "culture" to make causal conclusions.
  • Collect data on the effects of American versus other culture priming.
