Impact on society

  • Helicopters have been used for news, military, police, medical teams and much more.

Leonardo Da vinci

  • He never built and tested it but his notes and drawings mapped out exactly how the device would operate.
  • The "airscrew" was to be powered by four men standing on a central platform turning cranks to rotate the shaft. With enough rotation, da Vinci believed the invention would lift off the ground.

The Evolution of the helicopter

Arthur Young

  • He began testing the helicopters and thinking of ways to improve the helicopters.

Paul Cornu

  • Cornu’s twin-rotor craft, powered by a 24-horsepower engine, flew briefly on Nov. 13, 1907, at Coquainvilliers, near Lisieux. Previously, another French helicopter, the Bréguet-Richet I, had risen under its own power but had been held in position by men standing on the ground. Though historically important, Cornu’s design proved impractical and soon was abandoned.
  • he invented a teetering rotor with a stabilizer bar. The bar had bob weights attached to each end and was directly linked to the rotor blades through the pitch control linkages. The idea was that if the rotor was disturbed in pitch or roll, the gyroscopic inertia of the bar could be used to introduce cyclic pitch into the main rotor system, increasing the effective damping to disturbances and giving stability to the entire rotor system.

James Montgomery &Preston Robbs

  • the helicopter was made to be light-weight. It was being constructed of a 20-foot length of steel beam bent into a wide U-shape, with six “star” frames all tied together with cables. A rotor was mounted at each end of the main structural beam
  • The company Bell Aircraft started to help fund Mr. Young and strated to produce his new innovation to the helicopter
  • The reason the helicopter was built is because two French industrialists offered a prize of fifty-thousand French Francs to the first pilot who could fly an aircraft around a one kilometer closed circuit.
  • Bell started to make helicopters and further advance them into the modern day helicopter
  • Bell starting selling there products to the military
  • However the helicopter flew but not very well, it could only go a few feet high and had to be guided by men

Étienne Oehmichen

  • this helicopter could go a kilometer in one direction

Igor Ivanovitch Sikorsky

  • This was the first "successful" helicopter built in 1924
  • he was racing against a man named Pescara of spain to build the first successful helicopter
  • Sikorsky built and developed the helicopter R-4 and started his own production of the R-4
  • He started his company (Sikorsky) and produced the R-5 in 1943
