The Franklin

Personality Trait Inferences

Personality Traits

The Franklin is a very wealthy and humble man that feeds his audience with bounds and bounds of food whilst he tells his stories. In the Franklin Tale, a story mostly to do with courtly love is portrayed and told, a story that shows people how star-crossed and intense love can really be. He was kind, generous, and was always welcoming guests to listen to his stories.

"A Franklin is a wealthy landowner (not by noble birth). As all medieval citizens, he should be humble and devout. He should avoid all excess and work at achieving heavenly reward through earthly denial." (The Franklin's Proper Role)

" He keeps his pantry well-stocked with food and wine, and woe be a cook of his who is not ready to provide a delightful meal on a moment's notice! With so much food does he shower his guests that it seemed that "it snewed in his hous of mete and drynke" (General Prologue 347)."

"There lived a noble Knight named Arveragus in Brittany who passionately loved a lady named Dorigen and undertook many great enterprises to win her. The lady’s beauty was unsurpassable and she came of a very noble lineage. Arveragus thus didn’t have the temerity to tell the lady of his longing and heart’s desire. At last the lady compassionately agreed to accept him as her lord and husband. Arveragus was thrilled and promised to obey all her wishes. The lady was honored by the Knight’s magnanimity and swore that they would always live in harmony and peace. They then got married and started living in perfect happiness."(http://thebestnotes.com/booknotes/Canterbury_Tales/Canterbury_Tales29.html)

The Franklin is generally a kind gentlemen, and he gives food out to guests that listen to his stories. He strongly believes in Epicurus, whom taught that "the way to perfect happiness was through pleasure." He was very likeable, with a red face and white beard.

"And there withal come of so high kindred that scarcely could this noble knight for dread, tell her his woe, his pain, and his distress." (The Franklin Tale)

"That never in his life, by day or night, would he assume a right of mastery... As any lover of his lady shall." ( The Franklin Tale)

Inference of Physical Description

In the Franklin Tale, the main character Aurelius is bed ridden after he finds out the lady he has fallen for is already married to another man. He deeply is hurt for a long time, whilst his brother takes care of him at his bed side. The second quote describes the woman he longed for, Dorigen, whom is faithful to her husband, while he is overseas.

The Franklin was a wealthy guild and/or "Haberdasher".

He oft wore very nice clothing, and always had a very large supply of food for his so called "guests". As he told

his stories, he made sure that people always had a meal and that his tables were always ready for the next crowd.
