Possible Solutions to Ageism

  • Showing some very powerful role models that are in their 60's - 70's.

  • Showing that not all elderly people are bad and are grumpy, maybe they just want to talk to someone or they feel left out.

  • Show younger people images or examples of elderly people having struggles in everyday life, like mowing the lawn, gardening, manual labor, etc.

INTERVIEW

Solutions are needed so that society doesn't look down on them no longer. And starts to accept them for who they are.

  • What does ageism mean to you?

  • How do you think it is presented in the media?

  • How do you think it affects our community?

  • What solution's of ageism do you think we can do?

We asked a few people a couple of questions that are shown on here. And here are the results...

How has Ageism changed over time?

  • Ageism was well known started in 1969 by a man named Robert Butler to discriminate the elder people.

  • He used it to discriminate against others.

What Ageism means and who it affects

  • Ageism is a stereotyping and a prejudice against individuals or groups because of their age.

  • Elderly make up a group with the majority of negative responses.

  • The majority of children have positive perception and responses towards old age.

How is Ageism Presented in Media?

  • In advertisement, people introduce products using young beautiful women, saying it can make you look younger.

  • Media causes them to think they are supposed look young and act young, this makes peoples idea's change about the elder.

  • There are hardly any commercials that show products that are actually useful to them.

  • Examples of ageism in media can be in movies & TV shows like:
  • UP: Mr Fredrickson
  • Modern Family: Jay
  • George Lopez TV show: Benny
  • Grown Ups: All of them

Magazines try to sell products or ideas to the elderly people. Saying they can look younger or say this product will make you look good if this person does. Sometimes that person is in their 30's or even 20's.

How ageism affects our community?

It Is Oppression Against All Elderly

  • Societal norms marginalize seniors, treat them with disrespect, make them feel unwelcome and generalize as if they were all the same.

  • Due to ageism being represented in media, some of the affects are bad towards the elderly.

  • Most elderly people are looked down on to by others who are younger then them due to how media represents them.

Here is an old aged male taking an evening stroll in the park.
