Causes and Effects of the French Revolution

Causes

Enlightenment

Famine

One of the major causes of the French Revolution was enlightenment. The French Revolution was directly inspired by Enlightenment ideals and respectively marked the peak of its influence and the beginning of its decline.

Also, famine on the countryside led to revolts. There was a food shortage in France due to bad crops and weather. Some people saw this as God’s anger with the monarchy.

More taxes

State-bankruptcy forced the king to assemble the estates-general to get more taxes. Many people resented the absolute power of the monarchy, and the taxes given to the peasant class. Some princes and dukes who thought the power belonged to them resented the monarchy was well, and felt if it couldn’t be them.

Rise of Napoleon

The Revolution unified France. It also enhanced the power of the national state. This event of great historical significance sowed the seeds of democracy and quickened the advent of nationalism in Europe. It leaded the shift from absolute monarchy to Republicanism in many parts of the continent of Europe.

It also led to the rise of Napoleon and the empire he won. Napoleon was a French military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century. He was a military genius. He was hero for France.

Series of wars

The revolution led to a series of wars between various countries and the French. France fought a series of wars against the monarchies of Europe to first protect and spread the revolution, and then to conquer territory. It was the starting point of the Napoleonic Wars.
