Background Information

What were the goal of Frederick the Great?

Frederick the Great from Prussia was born on January 24, 1712 in Berlin, Germany. His father was William the first from Prussia and his mother was princess Sophia. Frederick was forced into the army and set on a course of military science and government. His father pushed him to be educated in running and defending a state. He was abused by his father, often being beaten and humiliated by him. In 1730, at age 18, Frederick tried to escape with his childhood friend but they were caught and arrested. His father pardoned him but placed him as a junior official in local administration to learn the ways of government. Frederick's father arranged for him a marriage to Elizabeth Christine of Brunswick-Bevern, in 1733. He quickly separated from her and showed no interest in women. Frederick took the throne upon the death of his father in 1749. Frederick the Great, was Prussia's king from 1740 to 1786. He was mostly known by winning wars and expanding territories, he established Prussia as a strong military power. He died in August 17, 1786.

Frederick the Great's goal for his nation were to encourage religious toleration and legal reform. He wanted the Austrian land of Silesia, which bordered Prussia. Silesia had produced iron ore, textiles, and food products, which Frederick wanted for his country. He tried to achieve this goal by having a war that was known as the "Seven Years War" against Maria Theresa. Frederick was successful in achieving his goal because the British had gained sole economic domination at India, and gained the colonies of the French.

Foreign Affairs

-The Seven Years War of 1756-63, which would involve Prussia and Britain on one side against Austria, France, Spain, Sweden and Russia on the other began when Frederick invaded Saxony in 1756.

- Frederick knew that a formidable coalition of European powers had assembled against him and decided to attack first.

-Frederick was not invading, but merely passing through on the way to Bohemia, which was Hapsburg territory, but the Prussians swiftly took Leipzig and Dresden, while Frederick's sanctimonious talk about protecting Protestantism pleased his British allies, as it was meant to.

Groups Of the Day

Frederick the great was mainly inspired to take the throne when he saw that many philosophers believed and had the trust in him after the death of his father which recently had the throne. The rules that he imposed also had a huge advantage on who followed him, for instance he made cereals and other goods way cheaper by lowering the taxes imposed on the people. He also allowed freedom of speech which allowed the people of his reign to be pretty happy with him. He was also allied with France. The people that followed him and the alliances that he had were one of the major reason to why he had his reign.

Opinion

A monarch is a ruler over a society or a state that is hereditary from his family members. Such as some kings and queens, they are usuallly in that position because of their old relatives. I believe that Frederick the Great of Prussia was an absolute monarch because he made everybody be loyal to the military. He accomplished things like he made the country of Prussia a better country.
