What Is SIT?

The SIT procedure takes place in 3 stages

Conceptualisation

Skill Acquisition and Rehearsal

Real life Application

Evaluation!

The client then goes away and uses the learnt techniques in a real life situation.

The client then usually has follow-up sessions to discuss how the techniques worked or to learn more techniques.

The therapist helps and teaches the client coping strategies including relaxation techniques and comes up with stress releasing activities. Realistic thoughts about situations are also discussed and practiced.

  • Looks specifically at an individuals problems and causes of stress
  • The training can be tailored to clients needs
  • Deals with the problem directly, unlike drugs
  • Proven to be effective: Miechenbaum (1985)

Stress Inoculation Training is a Cognitive approach and makes the client reevaluate and change their way of thinking.

The therapist sits and talks to the client and tries to find out the stressors that affect them and what their usual responses are.

  • Time consuming, many sessions and follow up sessions
  • A lot of clients effort and motivation needed
  • Do not help all stressful situations which are out of your control
  • This training may not work with people who have an External Locus of Control

Usually patterns of self defeating thoughts are revealed.
