The little Love-god lying once asleep,

Laid by his side his heart-inflaming brand,

Whilst many nymphs that vowed chaste life to keep

Came tripping by; but in her maiden hand

The fairest votary took up that fire

Which many legions of true hearts had warmed;

And so the General of hot desire

Was, sleeping, by a virgin hand disarmed.

This brand she quenched in a cool well by,

Which from Love's fire took heat perpetual,

Growing a bath and healthful remedy,

For men diseased; but I, my mistress' thrall, Came there for cure and this by that I prove,

Love's fire heats water, water cools not love.

Paraphrase

T.P.C.A.S.T.T.

T:sonnet 154 or "the little love-god lying once asleep"-cupid was asleep

P: Basically, love was not allowed/active in this town and eventually a man and woman fell in love with each other

C:when it say "love-god" it means love in general and "his heart-inflaming brand" is just people trying to make sense of love and their feelings.

A:I believe the tone was serious throughout the whole poem.

S:there is no shift found in this poem.

T:I believe this is saying love was not active at that moment.

T:love overpowers hate but hate cannot extinguish love
