Nature VS. Nurture

Impact of the isolation

  • nurture played a bigger role in the girls lives because the girls learned from the wolves and copied their behavior like they themselves were wolves.
  • Nature didn't seem to have much of a part in their development at all , these two children from different families grew up in the same environment and therefore had very similar mannerisms.

Their Environment After they were found

  • The children adapted behavior similar to wolves such as eating crouched over, eating raw meat and they didn't speak.
  • they also developed thick calluses from walking on all fours.
  • They preferred the company of animals

  • Once the two girls were discovered they were brought to an orphanage by Joseph Singh.
  • They were provided with real food and care.
  • They lived with other children and were exposed to much more human interaction.

How were the girls discovered

Kamala and Amala

Typical behaviors associated with humans

Starts at 2:00

  • Kamala and Amala were both young when they were discovered by Joseph Singh, about 8 years old and one and a half.
  • They were supposedly discovered and caught in a wolves den.
  • It's unclear how long they had been in the wild

I believe that typically when we think of a human we think of someone who walks on two legs, who expresses feelings, speaks, and is comfortable with human interaction.

Looking at what I would typically think of as a human based off of behavior, I would have to rethink that when looking at the children. They're clearly human and yet the don't exhibit the traits normally associated with one.

  • Kamala and Amala were born in Bengal India
  • They were raised by a family of wolves in a cave-like den.
  • It is believed that the wolves had abducted the children at different times and they were not sisters.

Their environment before they were found

why do you think the child ended up the way they did

  • the girls were living in the wild inside a dark cave accompanied by a family of wolves
  • The she-wolf treated them as her own.
  • They had little to no contact with humans before their discovery.
  • The two girls had little to no human contact in their early lives and they were raised by wolves.
  • they adapted behavior very similar to wolves such as eating raw meat.
  • they were raised as wolves from such a young age that that is the only way of living they know.

how did the children adjust to being reintroduced to society

scientist singh took on the task to help these girls adapt to their new human life

sites

before the two girls had a chance to adapt to ordinary human behavior, Amala died in 1921 of a kidney infection and Kamala in 1929 of tuberculosis.

Before kamala's death however, she was able to learn a very limited vocabulary and more human-like mannerisms

what does this situation tell you about the importance of society and development?

  • this situation shows how the people and environment surrounding you plays a huge role in forming the way you act, learn and develop.
  • regarding this child's life, i feel although it was tragic their situation, it was a great scientific experiment that we can all learn from and understand.
  • for the girls, adapting to an entirely new way of life would be very hard after growing up a completely different way, having to re-learn everything.
