Think-Pair-Share

How do assumptions shape our understanding of the process of cross-cultural adaption?

The Assumptions

People travel and move to foreign environments for many different reasons. This involves crossing cultural boundaries.

It is based on three assumptions

"Open-Systems"

1. Humans have an inherent drive to grow and adapt.

The Basics of the Theory

What are some examples of crossing cultural boundaries can you think of?

Cross-cultural adaptation theory focuses on the act of establishing and maintaining a relatively stable and reciprocal relationship with the host environment through adaptation.

2. Adaptation to one's environment occurs through communication.

3. Adaptation is a complex and dynamic process.

A.K.A- The process of stress-adaptation-growth is needed to lead to personal growth and a positive relationship between the individual and the host country.

What if...

  • How would you feel if you could no longer read signs because they were in a different language?
  • What would you do if the clothes you owned were considered unacceptable to wear in public because people of your gender dress differently there?
  • What if you were always expected to eat with chopsticks because Western utensils were unavailable?

Definition Hit List

Foreigner:

A person not belonging to a particular place or group; a stranger or outsider

Given the right amount of time, would you be able to adjust to these differences?

Adaptation:

The reaction and solution to stress, most of the time is involuntary

Acculturation:

Contacts between different cultures, either directly or through the media, provide us with the reason why it is important to learn how to communicate successfully.

Stress:

Cross Cultural Adaptation Theory

Occurs when placed in unknown environment, builds up as tension

Culture:

The beliefs, religion and practices of a particular group, a shared set of values

The stress-adaptation-growth dynamic

  • Students are to examine ONE theory and identify its strengths and weaknesses

Stage 1: The

Honeymoon Stage

  • Typically extends from arrival through to first couple of months within new country.
  • Filled with excitement, curiosity.
  • People go out of their way to get acclimated to the culture (trying to follow cultural norms).
  • Also find that everyday tasks from home are more challenging.
  • E.g Ordering at a restaurant, sending mail, or taking a taxi.

Stage 4: The

Adjustment Stage

  • The person has successfully overcome culture shock.
  • The person within the new culture realises that there are good and bad aspects to it, just like their native culture.
  • They can live and function within different cultural norms.
  • E.g On a busy street of India, people in the adjustment stage would be able to follow these cultural norms.

Stage 2: The Culture Shock Stage

Stage 3: The

Recovery Stage

  • Happens over time, and the pace is different for everyone.
  • People start to become more understanding of the new culture.
  • They not only understand that it is apart of that countries culture but they find ways to work within that system.
  • They may even begin to self-reflect, 'Who am I now?' 'Who was I before?'
  • Tends to start 3-4 months after arrival.
  • Characterised by the feeling of culture shock.
  • Culture shock= the sensation of confusion associated with experiencing a new culture.
  • People begin to notice extreme differences between their native culture and the new one.
  • E.g. Food of the new culture restricted you from eating food that you traditionally like to eat. In New Zealand- they eat the fish eyes.
  • This stage might include discouraging experiences and inspire feelings of homesickness, leading to the rejection of the new culture.

When we experience stress from being in an unfamiliar cultural environment we gain the ability to communicate in accordance with the norms and practices of the host culture and actively engage in its social communication processes.

5 Minute Powerwrite about Cross Cultural Adaptation Theory

What results from the process of cross-cultural adaptation is a blending of old and new. This helps individuals to fit into the receiving community, whilst still maintaining elements of their own culture.

Group scenarios- moving to different countries role paly. Acting out the three different stages.

What makes this theory effective?

Individuals need to demonstrate certain characteristics.

1. A sense of personal, social & cultural identity

2. Empathises with and appreciates the diversity of cultures.

3. An ability to effectively communicate across cultural divides.

4. An awareness and sensitivity to major domestic and international issues.

What elements/factors might speed up this process?

Is this process one which occurs rapidly?

What impact does this process have upon the recieving community?
