Canada gets a new flag
Terry Fox Death
Canada had been using different flags from its founding through to the first half of the 20th century, most of which reflected Canada's British Heritage. In the 1960s, however, the federal government of Lester B. Pearson decided that Canada needed a new symbol to replace the Red Ensign. This event took place on January 28, 1965, the queen proclaimed that the maple leaf would be our new flag. This event shows that Canada is a more independent country, our country wants to have a different face not just us being under Britain. I would give this event a significance ranking of +1 because it is Canada being its own country. This demonstrates progress because our country is breaking away from Britain and becoming more of our own country.
The League of Nations was a organization of countries including Canada that formed after World War One to try to bring world peace. This organization was formed on the 10th of January 1920. This organization sought to find world peace after the events of WWI, Canada was part of the organization and took part on decision making as well as many other things. This event is historically significant to Canada because at this time Canada had peace and was taking part in the world. I give this event at +2 significance because of the fact that this was a event that helped many countries including Canada. This event demonstrates progress, the world is coming together for peace.
On June 28 1981, Terry Fox dies to cancer before completing his Marathon of Hope. In Canadian society Terry Fox is a household name and a hero, he raised money and raised awareness to cancer research with his all across Canada run, today we remember him every year for the Terry Fox run which happens all over Canada. This event was significant because it raised a lot of money for cancer research and inspired many Canadians. I give this a ranking of +1 because of the effect it had on Canada and the world. This demonstrates progress, even though Terry Fox died, he raised so much awareness about cancer and has saved many lives because of what he did.
Cairine Wilson was the first woman senator in Canada, she represented the Liberals and was elected into senate on 20 Feb 1930. This event represented Canada's progress and how we were accepting women more into society, this event proved that women aren't just stay at home mom's and can have big careers. I think this had a big impact on society in Canada because it proved a woman can do the same type of job as a man. I give this event a 0 ranking because it was bound to happen sooner or later but it was a great growth in society for Canada. This demonstrates progress because our society is accepting women as something more.
In 2005, gays and lesbians won the right to marry in Canada. This event is significant because it show that Canada is progressing as a country and accepting everyone in society. This was a big step considering only 3 other countries at the time had same sex marriage legal on the federal level at the time. I think this marks the fact that Canada is a accepting country and a great place to live. I give this significance a ranking of +2 because our country decided everyone should be allowed to love who they want. This event demonstrates progress in Canadian culture and how we accept anybody.
Side note
Hey Mr. Gj, its Marcel, I wanted to let you know that when I started making this project I used the suggested site Tiki-Toki Timelines, this site is not a good site to be working with. I signed up as a guest user for it because I didn't know if our school had a account. I started making the timeline with spencer and after getting to the 1950's, the website excited out of the timeline and said "timeline maximum reached and deleted the whole thing. Me and spencer had to recreate the whole thing on Prezi, I just wanted to let you know so no other students get affected by this in the future. Btw I did from the 1960-2016+ and spencer did 1914-1959.

This year in Toronto the Toronto Raptors went to the conference finals in the NBA. This is the first time the Raptors have came this far in basketball, considering Toronto is the only Canadian basketball team in the NBA, this event was huge for Canada, and Toronto. This event shows that Canada is viable in more than just hockey, it also brought the country and city together because of all the hype. I give this a significance ranking of +1 because it demonstrates how people come together in a country and city to cheer for team, it shows how people can come together.

The Canadian Parliament passes the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
World War One, the first world war, started in August 1914. Great Britain declared war on Germany causing Canada to join in the effort to defeat Germany. This event was very significant to Canada and to the world, Canada lost many lives during the war and the war also brought conscription and propaganda really into the world. I would give this event a +2 ranking for significance. This demonstrates decline as the world is falling apart and going into war.
Working with provincial and national safety and standards organizations, Transport Canada made the national safety standards for the design and construction all motor vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Safety Act came into effect on January 1, 1971. This event symbolized that Canada is starting to see the risk of motor vehicles and that the need to be safe. I would give this event a significance ranking of -1. This demonstrates progress in the daily lives of citizens in Canada, Transport Canada is looking out for people.
The event of public transit being added to Canada and Toronto was great progress for our country. Public transit in Toronto was added because the city knew there would be traffic jams in downtown, the subway was opened on March 31st 1954. This event is significant to Canadian history because it marks our country being involved in our cities and recognizing that we need something to help transportation in the city as well as the fact we are keeping up with the world and how it is progressing. I give this event a ranking of +1 because this was a big step in reducing traffic in Canadian cities. This event demonstrates progress because our cities are reducing traffic and it is easier to commute.
