Tells us (the audience) whether the film is set in the present or the future.

They act as an indicator to the audience of a characters personality, status and job. They can also signify certain individuals or groups.

Settings and locations play an important part in film-making and are not just background.

Sets build up from scratch.

Science Fiction for example would have spaceships, control panels and metalic colourings.

Or a horror film would contain blood, a haunted house in the middle of nowhere etc..

To highlight important characters and objects within the frame, this can also make characters appear mysterious/happy etc..
