QTS (Q)

Who can you teach?

Where can you teach?

QTS(Q) is aimed towards those teaching in compulsory education (3-11 or 11-16).

QTLS is aimed at those teaching in FE (14-18).

You do not currently need a qualification to teach in non-maintained schools or colleges legally.

Sometimes you can teach legally within maintained schools.

So the argument is less about “where can I” and more “where should I teach?"

2012 Reforms

QTS vs QTLS

Section 1: my teaching biography

In this introductory section describe your route into teaching or training:

the role(s) you have and the context in which you teach.

Section 2: standardised elements

These are drawn from typical sources and are common to all candidates.

They are determined by a set of requirements that fit all teaching roles.

Completion of an approved initial teacher training qualification.

Confirmation of numeracy and literacy skills at or above Level 2.

Supporting testimony

Section 3: personalised elements

These are determined by SET and are non-standardised, personal and unique.

The personalised elements are:

Subject currency comprising written and supporting evidence, such as certificates

teaching and learning comprising written narrative plus supporting evidence.

Self-evaluation comprising written and supporting evidence plus self assessment

against the 2014 professional standards supporting evidence where possible

Professional development planning comprising written narrative

Reflective practice

Qualified Teacher Status

Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills

(Not Qualified to Teach in the Learning Sector)

Both are qualifications regarding ones ability to teach.

Teaching Standards

“All teachers with QTS are subject to The Education Regulations 2012.

[These] may additionally be used to assess the performance of teachers who are subject to these regulations and who hold qualified teacher learning and skills (QTLS) status.”

Teaching Standards

The Professional Standards

2014 saw SET (formerly EFT) create their own standards to which their practitioners can work within.

Qts is called the ‘Total Q’ of a speaker driver and is derived from an equation where Qes is multiplied by Qms and the result is divided by the sum of the same.

QTLS upon the completion of the sequencing of the rice genome we can now clone and analyze quantitative trait loci (QTLs) to produce the desired higher yield for food/biofuel.

QTS - QTLS

SET Membership (QTLS) bring you:

Career and professional development

Professional status and recognition

Community and support

Saving money

(as of today)!

The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and General Teaching Council for Wales maintain all registrations, as well as issuing QTS certificates.

Member Associations

You need to be a member of SET to continue to have your QTLS status. The cost of undertaking professional formation leading to QTLS is £485.

SET recommend their practitioners are also members of other relevant agencies/associations.

QTS means you are licensed by the DfE to teach.
