Timeline of How Skiing Changed from Transport to Sport

Chinese aboriginals use rock paintings on cave walls to show them using skis to hunt and for transportation in the winter.

Skiing makes its debut at the 1924 olympic games in Chamonix, with the cross country and Nordic combined events. The International Ski Federation (FIS) is also formed in 1924.

The first nonmilitary ski competition was held in Norway in 1843. The first ski tours, traveling up and downhill to explore, and ski jumping competitions were held about 10 years after that.

In the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, ski cross, slopestyle, and women's ski jumping were added to the event lineu. Slopestyle was added to the competitio for both skiers and snowboarders.

Aerial and mogul competitions, two types of freestyle skiing, are added to the Albertville Olympics, taking place in France.

Norwegian employees in Argentina introduced skiing to South America, and about a decade later the United States introduced it to Japan.

Special troops on skis are used by the Norwegian army for soldiers to travel in the commonly snowy weather there. Troops from the United States and Britain have trained soldiers on skis as recently as 2012.
