Why did it happen?

  • Forced the Chinese to open up more trade with other countries and to lower tax on imports and exports
  • Chinese had to pay 21 million dollars to Britain and gave up their territory of Hong Kong to Britian
  • To Chinese this is considered unfair but is the result of losing the war.
  • The Opium War was fought between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and China because they did not agree with diplomatic relations, trade, and the administrations if justice for foreign nationals.

The Treaty of Nanking aka The Treaty of Nanjing, was signed on August 29, 1842. It was an unequal treaty that marked the end of the First Opium War between the British and the Qing Emperors of 1839-1842. This treaty took place in China.
