Separation of Powers

Checks and Balences

By Summer Clemons

The Bill of Rights

The Separation of powers called for three separate branches of government with separate powers and responsibilities. The Legislative Branch is: Congress has the power to make laws. Congress would also consist of two houses: Senate and the House of Representatives. Each state would elect two senators to represent it in the Senate. This was created to ensure that each state would be equally represented. The House of Representatives ensued that the people of the U.S.A. were all equally represented. In the Judicial branch, the Supreme Court would decide if the laws made by Congress were constitutional or lawful. In the Executive branch, the President of the U.S.A. would carry out the laws passed by congress.

The End!

Checks and Balances ensured that none of the branches became too powerful. Each branch was given the power to check or limit thepower of the other two branches.

In 1791, The Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. The author of the document was James Madison. The document consisted of ten amendments to the constitution. The ten commandments are a written guarantee of our rights and freedoms. Some of them include: Freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and the right to have a trial by a jury.
