American Colonization Society's(ACS) Establishment
- Established in December 1816 by Robert Finley.
- It was supposed to please two groups in the US.
- One group was against African American freedom, and they were called the philanthropists.
- The other group who supported the African Americans and their freedom was called the Abolitionists.
Robert Finley
- Born in Princeton, NJ in 1772.
- Was briefly president of University of Georgia.
- Started college at age 11 at the College of New Jersey, later renamed Princeton University, and graduated when he was 15.
- He started the ACS.
- He later died on October 3, 1817.
What it Did
- It returned freed American Slaves to Africa.
- This got them away from other slave owners getting a hold of them and making them their new slaves.
- But where would they take the freed slaves in Africa?
Liberia
- The ACS decided to send slaves to Liberia (aka the Grain Coast).
- The first time it went there was in 1822.
- It is in Northwest Africa.
- They purchased the land for this reason.
- It was under the presidency of James Monroe.
- Some African Americans decided to stay in the US and fight for the rights of slavery.
- Over the next 40 years, about 19,000 African Americans settled there.
Dependence
- Both countries helped each other out if needed.
- It was like where 2 people say, "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine," so that they both were helped.
