Macbeth

The emotion of guilt is so uncontrollable and strong, that it cannot be erased and will always be there to affect and control the mind – causing the individual to relate to eccentric and abnormal behaviors

  • During the Banquet hosted by Macbeth after receiving the crown, and after acquiring the knowledge about the completed murder of Banquo, Macbeth see's a vision of Banquo in his spot at the table. This vision, along with many others, are created by the mind, and the emotion in which guilt creates. The visions in which he sees because of this trait cause him to go mad. After seeing Banquo"With twenty trenched gashes on his head" at his table, his guilt is transformed into madness (III, iv, 24).

The spirit and body become controlled and submerged by the emotions created by the feeling of guilt

  • Macbeth gets to a point where he becomes overwhelmed and emotionally unstable because of the feeling of guilt inside him, the voice telling him right from wrong. Macbeth, even before the death of Duncan is shown signs by his mind and soul about the sins in which he is about to partake in. On his way to Duncan's room (to kill him), Macbeth sees a bloody dagger in front of him, foreshadowing the deed he is about to commit. Upon saying; "Is this dagger which i see before me, the handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee...", Macbeth continues to head to Duncan's room, believing that the guilt will never last.
  • The trait of guilt overcoming, and submerging someone and their feelings in its great emotion is seen throughout many characters throughout the play. But it is visual that Lady Macbeth feels this emotional pain much more intense than others. When the Doctor tells Macbeth that she is "Not so sick, my lord, As she is troubled with thick-coming fancies", the audience sees the first real sign of how Lady Macbeth is having a tough time dealing with her's, and her husbands past actions.
  • The vision in which he sees is a direct example to how guilt submerges him in its wrath. The guilt causes him to have mental breakdowns and become a entire different man. The emotion takes over, and changes his body. In taking over his body, the pain causes him to go mad, and see these visions and events from the past.
  • It isnt long after the doctor tells Macbeth about the rough times his wife is going through, that he brings the news that “The queen, ...is dead” (V, v, 16). When this information is given out, it is seen that guilt can control your emotions, and drown you in them. The guilt was so strong that Lady Macbeth took her life to try to relive herself of them.

Fig. 7. "What If Death Is Nothing to Fear?"

  • Macbeth thinks that with time and experience in sinning and murder, that the guilt will begin to go away because of how regular these "deeds" start to occur in his life - will learn how to cope
  • This quote shows the state in which guilt causes Macbeth to be in. The emotion that causes him to break down, and have these uncontrollable crashes and visions. Guilt is a powerful emotion in which targets even the strongest of people.

- Upon seeing the ghost of Banquo, Macbeth shows how this guilt has taken over his mind, and how the guilt turns him mad throughout the play. When Macbeth sees this visions, he says;

"Blood hath been shed ere now, i' th' olden time,

Ere humane statute purged the gentle weal;

Ay, and since too, murders have been performed

Too terrible for the ear. The time has been

That, when the brains were out, the man would die,

And there an end. But now they rise again

With twenty mortal murders on their crowns

And push us from our stools. This is more strange

Than such a murder is."

(III,iv, 75-83)

  • After Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo, which is a severe example as to how Guilt affects the mind and spirit, Macbeth states that; "We are yet but young in deed", along with saying that it "Is the initiate fear that wants hard use"(III, iv 143, 144). This quote shows that even after Macbeth has just been haunted and traumatized by his guilt turned to madness, that he believes that with experience and time in murder, that these things (Expressions of guilt affecting behavior) will go away

  • During one of Lady Macbeth's "Thick coming-fancies", she says many things. During her nightmare caused by the guilt of killing Duncan, she says; "Out, damned spot! Out, I say!—One, two. Why, then, ’tis time to do ’t. Hell is murky!" (V, i, 31). When she says this, she is having trouble erasing the spot of blood on her clothing and hands. This represents that something as simple as washing the blood away, will not wash the guilt of doing the deed along with it. And this isnt the first time this happens as the gentlewomen states that It is an accustomed action with her to seem thus washing her hands. I have known her continue in this a quarter of an hour" (V, i, 25-27)

  • Along with having trouble cleaning the blood out of her clothes, the Doctor and gentle woman hear her say "Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, Oh, Oh!" (V, i, 44). In this quote, she is stating how the blood has stained her hands, being unable to wash them. These show that guilt directly causes madness because of the emotions it causes, and the way it affects them mind, and behavior of the people it targets.

  • Macbeth is a play that deals with psychology of guilt and madness and is a piece in which ties the two elements together. Guilt and madness are seen throughout the entire play and are the main reason for many of the good and bad choices that are made through its progression.

Guilt will cause individuals to try to either overcome the event completely, or live with what they have done, attempting to forget about the cause of shame

  • Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth think that it is easy to overcome a deed like the ones in which they complete - believe that living with the event will only get easier. This is seen when Lady Macbeth says that; "A little water clears us of this deed" (II, ii, 70).

Fig. 4. "6 Purely Psychological Effects of Washing Your Hands - PsyBlog."

Fig. 3. "Guilt."

  • When Lady Macbeth says this, she is showing that she believes that as long as the physical evidence is gone, that the guilt of committing such a crime against god will leave with it.
  • Guilt is a factor that can cause one to adhere to their implied offense to overcome the remorse, or result to madness in attempt to overthrow this feeling.
  • Guilt is an emotion in which can control the mind, body, spirit and behavior. Because of the way guilt can affect one, the one feeling its emotions can be greatly affected to a point where it drives them mad. Decisions can be made in thought of clearing the soul of the deed, or decisions in which may cause the guilts emotions to strengthen to a point unimaginable. In the Play Macbeth, the emotion of guilt is what causes Macbeth to fall, and become the way he does, and causes the death of his beautiful wife. The guilt is what disrupts the natural order in the play.
  • After the murder of King Duncan, and Macbeth's outbreak during a dinner party with the thanes, he tells the audience that he believes that he is already so deep into guilt and sin; "I am in blood, stepp'd in so far that should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go o'er.", that he might as well carry on and get the job done (III, iv, 136-140).
  • This quote explains how Macbeth sees guilt and how he lets it take a hold of him. Although he may think that it cant get any worse, it most defiantly can, and will. Because of the fact that Macbeth is expecting the guilt to eventually disappear, and saying that it can't get any worse, he is trying to overcome and displace this remorse. Little does he know that guilt never gets easier, but gets harder to cope with the longer its left alone for.
