Some of the World's biggest films follow similar logistics as Todorov's narrative theory

1. If we look at the number one all time highest grossing film, Avatar by James Cameron, created in 2009, we can see a correlation of equilibrium throughout the film as the main character encounters different problems and has to resolve and find new equilibrium throughout.

AVATAR

Avatar is not only renowned for being the worlds highest grossing film but its use of cinematic excellence through it's unique CGI creation.

In total Avatar generated a mass worldwide box office total making over $2 billion compared to its budget of $237 million

Avatar was distributed by 20th Century Fox, one of the largest distributors of films worldwide, however, if we look at the main production company, Lightstorm entertainment, we are able to identify how the film generated huge success from its latest films and how it makes the company appear more reliable after these successes.

SUCCESSES

EQUILIBRIUM

Todorov's theory suggests that all stories or plot lines can be broken down into 3 simple steps, but in order to make a successful film you need to look at the most successful films that use this theory.

Some of the worlds highest grossing films

tend to follow the rules of Todorov's narrative theory resulting in world known recognition for both the production company and film itself, if a film does well its likely the companies reputation will be positive.

STRUCTURE

Todorov's narrative theory is a theory that suggests all narratives follow a three part structure.

1. Equilibrium - balanced

2. Disruption - by an event

3. Resolution- where equilibrium is restored

Equilibrium is the idea of a balanced situation where all characters and situations are content and balanced, some of the most successful films are those where the equilibrium is disrupted, changing the course of events. This is later resolved restoring equilibrium and creating a happy ending.

THE THEORY

Todorov's Narrative film theory is a theory of equilibrium which resembles both a positive and negative story plot.

The theory itself is a theory produced by a Belgian-French philosopher and structuralist named Tzvetan Todorov.

Todorovs narrative theory of equilibrium

EXAMPLES

This format of equilibrium is found in lots of traditional fairytale, Disney, Pixar and kids films. Examples may include finding Nemo, where equilibrium is balanced at the beginning of the film, Nemo goes missing disrupting the balance, and is found again at the end resolving the situation. It's also included in other films like tangled, where the princess is happy being away in her tower, she finds out she is the missing princess stolen at birth and equilibrium is disrupted and restored again when shes reunited with her family.

Other film genres also use this format in order to create a successful and interesting storyline. Many famous films and forms of media have used this theory including The Harry Potter Series, the Shining and Star Wars. These are all extremely successful example of films which use this theory, and could be a good indicator of what we need to use in order to achieve success with your new films.
