1545 AD

The Council of Trent is called. It focuses on reforming the church and countering Protestant beliefs. The council is also called the Counter-Reformation.

1517 AD

Martin Luther publishes his "Ninety-Five Theses" describing issues within the Catholic church. This creates protestantism and begins the Protestant Reformation.

1409 AD

A council is called in Pisa to dispute the rightful pope because of a conflict in there being two popes. The council instead elects a third pope, creating more problems.

1231 AD

Pope Gregory IX establishes the Inquisition, which investigated people accused of heresy and punished them harshly with fines, torture, prison sentences, or death.

1054 AD

The Great Schism occurs, separating the Catholic Church into two parts, the Eastern Orthodox Church in the east and the Roman Catholic Church in the west.

Roman Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, which made Christianity legal in the Roman Empire. Christians could now worship openly. Religious tolerance spread across the Roman Empire.

Roman Emperor Nero begins persecuting Christians throughout the Roman Empire. Christianity is illegal in Rome and anyone practicing it can be killed.
