North Carolina State University researchers are conducting 17 regional projects that directly affect this river basin. Some of these projects target the effects of water pollution on the basin, while other projects focus on the control of polluted runoff from agricultural land uses. There are also urban storm water control projects.
The Pasquotank River basin is located in Northeastern North Carolina. ex: Elizabeth City, The Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk
The Pasquotank River Basin encompasses 3,635 sq. miles.
464 stream miles
868,000 acres of saltwater in the basin.
The Pasquotank is home to four rare/endangered species:
Leatherback, Hawksbill, and Kemp's Ridley sea turtles and The West Indian Manatee.
It contains 41% of NC's water. It has more wildlife refuges than any other basin, has the lowest human population, which means less environmental damage. It inhabits endangered species.
The Pasquotank river Basin is home to red wolves, hydrilla, loggerhead and green turtles.
10% of the surface freshwater resources (streams) are impaired by agricultural activities.
At estuaries the water is polluted by fecal coliform bacteria. Polluted runoff from urban areas, septic tanks, and marinas, are the major sources of this pollution
