What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?
Prevention
A congenital syndrome caused by excessive consumption of alcohol by the mother during pregnancy characterized by retardation of mental development and of physical growth especially of the skull and face of the infant.
FAS can be prevented if a women stays away from drinking alcohol at conception and throughout pregnancy.
INTERVENTION SPECTRUM FOR FAS
1. Universal Prevention Of Maternal Alcohol Abuse- educates the broad public about the risk of drinking during pregnancy.
2. Selective Prevention Of Maternal Alcohol Abuse- targets women who are at greater risk of having a child with FAS or alcohol related effects.
3. Indicated Prevention of FAS- These women are directed of high risk women or previously alcohol abused users.

What causes F.A.S
Women who drink alcohol excessively.
By the mother drinking alcohol excessively. This disorder ranges from mild to severe. When women drink alcohol it easily passed through the placenta to the fetus.
