-Miro said his work "always takes place in three stages: first, the suggestion, always forms the material; second, the conscious organization of these forms; and third, the compositional enrichment."

-His goal was to "turn paintings into a poem." He believe a picture spoke a thousand words, and his could speak two thousand.

-Miró was a world renowned Spanish and Catalan painter, sculptor, muralist and ceramist.

-His first individual art exhibition was set up in 1918 in the Dalmau Galleries in Barcelona.

-His early art showed influences of Fauvism (through the use of pure and bright colors), cubism, folkloric Catalan art and Roman frescos.

-After visiting Paris in the 1920s, his art developed a surrealist style. He also began taking interest in collages and sculpting.

-In the late 1960s, Miró began painting murals and other public pieces.

Life

-In 1929, Joan Miró married Pilar Juncosa.

-The two had a daughter, named Dolores, on July 17, 1931.

-In 1972, he created The Joan Miró Foundation, Center for Contemporary Study of Art. He donated all of his art to this museum (about 240 paintings, 175 sculptures, 9 textiles, 4 ceramics, and 8,000 drawings.)

-During the last few years of his life, Miró suffered from heart disease. He died December 25, 1983 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain at the age of 90.

Early Life

-Joan Miró was born on April 20, 1893 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain with the name Joan Miró i Ferrá.

-His father was a watchmaker and his mother was a goldsmith.

-He began drawing at a very young age. There are recovered works by Miró from the time he was 8.

-After overcoming typhoid fever in 1911, he decided to dedicate his life to painting and studied at several art schools in Spain.
