- Married Lady Mildred Camilla Nichola Acheson in 1950
- had two daughters
- was a diplomat from 1954-1958
- died at age 73 in Bonn
- Planned to detonate a hand grenade in his uniform while embracing Hitler
- Would kill Hitler and himself
- Railway truck transporting the uniform he would wear was destroyed in air raid
Motivation
- Witnessed a mass execution of over three thousand civilians
- Afterwards questioned why he still followed Hitler
- Experience motivated him to join resistance groups
- wanted to preserve his honor by: dying in battle or rebelling against the government
