  • The ricinium was worn by widows for a year after their spouse passed away.
  • If a toga was worn by a woman, it meant that she was either a prostitute or a streetwalker. It could also mean that she had committed adultery. This toga was made up of coarse wool and was shameful to wear.
  • Based on their status, an upper class man wore either the tunic or the toga.
  • Upper class women wore tunics made out of luxurious fabrics, such as silk or linen. They might also have their tunics colored.
  • Wealthy boys wore the toga praetexta until they were 16. Once they reached 16 they wore the toga virilis.
  • Wealthy girls wore the toga praetexta until they hit puberty or got married. Girls also had the option of wearing the supparum.

The social status of the Roman Era created a variety of clothing and symbolic uses. These variations are part of the reason why Roman fashion is so memorable while continuing to have an impact on style in present western society. This time period has inspired designers around the world to create designs that merge history with contemporary flair. Nadaam just incorporated the Roman tunic in her fall 2015 line. This is evidence that these trends still continue on today and will remain in style for eternity.
