Dating the Source

Excavation

Dating this non-written source was the usual complicated task. This was a primary source, and when we started dating it we crossed off Radiocarbon dating and Dendrochronology. We plan to use absolute dating when we get a professional to look over the object, but relative dating may be needed if absolute is proven impossible. We will use the style of the object to determine an age range, or study the symbol to learn exactly when it was made.

Interpretation of the Source

The team dug their way through the first day with nothing but more bricks and pottery, tirelessly recording every shards location, the condition, and the tools used. But on the morning of the second day, we found it. After the wonderful multiple rooms and priceless pottery scattered on the floors, our pickaxes hit the nail on the head. Covered in earth, we found it, embedded in a wall. We were amazed with what we found, and treated it with extreme respect. Here is what we first saw when the symbol was unearthed:

We think this object was a model of a royalty Egyptian symbol, due to the style, expensive materials, and its placing in a grand structure along with ancient and expensive pottery. This quite possibly could be a present to royalty in Egypt. It was most likely left in this structure by accident when it was abandoned, when the people fled for mysterious reasons. What could have happened that would cause all life from this place to

flee?

The Formation

We found this ancient Egyptian symbol in a far and desolate corner of the country. About a month before, the team had seen two single, eroded bricks in the cracked and dry ground. We excavated, soon discovering a whole structure with multiple rooms and priceless pottery scattered on the floors, covered in earth. But perhaps the most interesting of all was the symbol. We found it in a wall, still gleaming after all these years. It was about two feet across, 1 foot wide. On the left there is a vulture-resembling bird. The bird has pristine black crystals on his outstretched wings and body, veins of gold stretching through the creases. The bird has a golden head and crown. Stretching from the birds wings is a large, detailed eye. Black stone outlines make the eye on white marble. On the other side of the eye, there is a gourd-like piece of gold. From the style we could tell that this was nothing from the past thousand years, or far beyond. Although we can't be sure as to what exactly happened here, the symbol was made for royalty. We believe that the eye was preserved with the hard packed sand underground. We have a general sketch of the original structure in which the Eye inhabited.

The Site of the Eye

First Findings

We had no idea what could be found here. The team was called to a distant corner of Egypt because of two tiny bricks sticking out of the ground. After starting the first stages of excavation, we could see that this would lead to something big. An entire structure was unearthed, years of sand tossed aside to reveal the remains of a town, possibly something larger. What else would we find here?

The team starts to work on the site.

The team's first sign of something big in this structure was pottery shards strewn on the floor.
