PRE-PERFORMANCE ROUTINE

Stage two

The Pre-Performance Routine

The monkey is still going nuts but is a little calmer now

It is your job now to calm it further

It might be useful to use some helpful words or pictures to get you in the mood to perform

How to develop a pre-performance routine

Most athletes have routines

Routines vary in length from short and simple to long and complex

The shorter the time it takes to complete a routine the better the performance

Your routine should feel comfortable

Develop a competition plan

Develop cue words

Develop cue pictures

What can pre-performance routines do for you?

Help focus concentration

Help mental preparation for an upcoming performance

Help go from thinking about irrelevant things to performance focus things.

Reduce distractions and help focus both internally and externally

Help control your monkey brain

Summary of the Monkey Brain

The Athletic brain, is one which combines three key areas.

The Computer - Parietal Lobe

The Human- Frontal Lobe

The Monkey brain - Limbic System

These brains all frequently work together, however often they come into conflict. The monkey brain nearly always wins.

Pictures

Words

Pictures can also programme your performance

They Help maintain focus

They build confidence

They help overcome nerves.

We all talk to ourselves, every minute of every day.

What we say can have an influence on our focus and performance

Words can help to pre-programme a performance or influence the monkey brain before or after it takes charge.

Words are simple, convenient and can be used anywhere.
