Ano Kaya Ang Kapalaran?

(1939)

“Ano Kaya Ang Kapalaran?” was composed by Francisco Santiago and was originally performed by Sylvia la Torre. It is a song of love and courtship in a form of a concert waltz. Its historical period dates from the American Period

Childhood

At the age of 10, Francisco Santiago came to Manila to study pianoforte under Blas Echegoyen, Faustino Villacorta, and Rev. Primo Calsada, a Dominican friar.

About the song

The song speaks of the fate awaiting a man who professes his undying love for his beloved even though he is unsure that it will be reciprocated. It is a favorite showpiece of light sopranos and coloraturas because it is a binary waltz in a minor-major mode with a short cadenza at the end.

Studies

He took a post-graduate course at the UP Conservatory of Music before going to the American Conservatory of Music for his certificate in advanced harmony and counterpoint. Santiago went to the Chicago Musical College for his doctorate in music. He was the first Filipino to obtain a doctor of music degree.

Death of Francisco Santiago

During the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the University of the PhilippinesConservatory of Music, the patriotic musician died of a heart attack. He was buried at North Cemetery, Manila.

In 1908, his first composition, Purita, was dedicated to the first Carnival Queen, Pura Villaneuva.
