Assessing Mastery

What assessment will give you data about student progress toward achievement of standard mastery?

What works for you? McGraw Hill-created assessments, teacher-created, etc...

Mastery Criteria

Standard Support Material/ Technology/ Differentiated Instruction

How does the pacing guide provide instructional support? What resources will provide support to teach this standard? How will instruction be differentiated to ensure mastery of the standard?

This information is dependent on your class. In this case, we can refer to the pacing guide - specifically the "Instructional Tools" Column - for all three sections.

  • May be explicitly or implicitly stated

Let's Do Some Unpacking!

What would students

need to know and be

able to do to demonstrate

mastery?

Faculty Meeting

August 27th, 2014

LAFS.4.RI.1.2

Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text. Cognitive Complexity: Level 2: Basic Application of Skills & Concepts

Clarification:

Students must identify the main idea and find the most important details that strengthen the main idea. They must also explain the text in their own words.

I Can Statements:

I can define and determine the main idea of a text

I can define and determine the key details in the text

I can explain how key details determine the main idea

I can summarize the main idea using key details from the text

I can analyze key details found in multiple locations of the text

I can determine which details from the text best support the main idea

Why "Unpack" the Standards?

When we analyze the standards to determine what students need to:

•Know (concepts)

•Be able to do (skills)

We are better prepared to teach, and this results in better student outcomes.
