Characters; Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Christopher John Logan &Little Man Logan

Man vs Society:

StAcey logan

Little Man Logan (Clayton Chester Logan) is a meticulously neat 6 year-old. Little Man is the youngest of the Logan children. He also doesn't understand why African Americans get treated poorly by whites and doesn't understand why blacks' and whites' rights are different. All he knows is that he is underprivileged and looked down upon by the other race.

Christopher John Logan is a plump, cheerful 7 year-old boy. He is the third-oldest of the children. He is timid and easygoing. Christopher John doesn't really understand the family's current financial and racial situation, so he is very innocent compared to his other siblings.

The Wallaces

The Wallace brothers: (Kaleb, Dewberry, and Thurston) Run a store on their own land. They are white, racist and violent. They are responsible for many horrific acts of burning down houses.

Stacey Logan is a 12-year-old boy who is slowly progressing into manhood. He is Cassie's brother and a wiser person. He is very protective and understands racism. He is the oldest child of the family and is friends with T. J. (a boy his age) but can be skeptic at times. Stacey eventually realizes in order to keep the family together, he must be the man of the family when Papa (his father) is away.

Papa (David Logan)

Cassie is made to address a white child as if she were superior to her and to apologize for something that wasn't her fault. In the Mississippi society at the time, black people were viewed as inferior to white people.

Uncle Hammer & Mama

Cassie Logan

Papa Logan is The father of the Logan children. Being an african American, He values his independence, leaving for months at a time to work on the railroad in order to keep the land that his family owns. Although he is always away, he cares deeply for his wife and kids.

Mama (Mary Logan) Is the mother of her four children, Stacey, Cassie, Christopher-John, and Little Man. She's a beautiful woman who teaches seventh grade at Great Faith Elementary. Her class gets smaller every year when her older students leave school to work on their families' sharecropper lands. Despite this, she stayed optimistic. However, she was eventually fired and became very depressed.

Uncle Hammer is the uncle of the Logan children. He does not tolerate racism and cannot seem to deal with it wisely. Despite being an under privileged African American, he has a lot of money to buy nice clothes and even an expensive car.

The narrator and protagonist's name is Cassie Logan. She is a 9 year old, African American girl with a fiery temper, she's very brave, and is also very naive about racism. She tends to act just like the boys and is rarely feminine. She's strong-willed, and will speak her mind in just about any given situation.

Story Summary; Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Rating And Recommendation; Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry

T.J. is a 14-year-old boy who is a friend of Stacey's until he causes Stacy's mother a great deal of pain, which causes him to lose the respect of everyone he knows. He is arrogant and naughty, always trying to cheat on tests and look good. He becomes friends with the Wallace boys. They treated him nicely but laughed at him behind his back.

Setting ; Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Genre; Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry takes place in Mississippi. The year is 1887, during the Great Depression. This is a time when racism was still socially acceptable.

The Logan family works hard to keep the small piece of land they own. The children are harassed by white kids at school. The Wallace boys burn some local black men, killing one, and so the Logan family leads a boycott of their store. When Stacey gets in a fight with his best friend T. J. at the Wallace store, Mama decides to go through the community and urge people not to go there. However, many families have nowhere else to shop. The Logans offer to buy good for them in Vicksburg, a friend helping with payments. Meanwhile, Christmas comes. However, Mama soon loses her teaching job, and other pressure is put on the Logan family. Other families who sharecrop land are forced to return to the Wallace store. Soon, the bank makes Logans to pay up on a loan they once took out. Meanwhile, T. J. has become a rogue, a known thief, and he hangs out with the Wallace boys, one day, they bring him along on a murderous rampage and manage to frame him. Papa goes to stop the lynching that follows. Almost as soon as they leave, the cotton field catches fire, as if it was struck by lightning. The lynch mob an local black farmers must band together in order to stop the fire.

I would rate Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry 10/10. Readers will share Cassie's outrage and fear as she faces the trials and tribulations involved with nonstop racism and violence in this beautifully executed story. Although she discovers some pretty disturbing things, readers will be comforted knowing that she is supported by a strong, wise family. It's this loyalty, compassion, and intense emotion that enable the Logans to endure in the horrific racism of 1930s Mississippi. Mildred doesn't sugar coat this terrible era as she describes terrorism by nightriders and betrayal at the hands of friends. This book should be read with or introduced to a student by a parent or teacher, both for the disturbing content and to help explain undefined topics, such as sharecropping and Reconstruction. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is the best kind of historical drama, in which powerful lessons are encased in such a gripping story with such unforgettable characters that no reader will feel like they're "studying" history at all.

The genre of Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry is historical drama. Similar to historical fiction, historical drama tells stories with intense plots that take place many years ago.
