Successful?

  • Around 50 B.C.
  • Nomadic tribes in Korea settle down into three kingdoms
  • Paekche, Silla, and Koguryo
  • Note that these three kingdoms have alternative ways in spelling
  • Silla became unified under Taedong-gang River in late 600 A.D.
  • Prospered off of irrigated crops and famous buildings/crafts
  • Golden crafts and temples
  • Gave Korea a sense of nationality for the first time
  • Unified under the single religion of Buddhism
  • Was known all around, including in the western world
  • Excavated many gold items and lived in luxury
  • Had a strong military even before it was unified
  • Cavalry units and scale plate armor

  • Two strong rebels emerged inside the kingdom
  • Kyon-hwon and Kung-ye
  • Kyon-hwon went to old Paekche territory in 892 A.D.
  • Named it "Later Paekche Kingdom"
  • Took it as his land
  • In 901 A.D., Kung-ye takes central Silla and claims it his land
  • Names it Ma-jin Kingdom
  • Wang Kon succeeds Kung-ye in 918 A.D.
  • Renamed Ma-jin Kingdom to Koryo Kingdom
  • This began the Koryo Dynasty

  • Rebellions begin in late 800 A.D.
  • Corrupt clan system made leaders from the Kim clan grow powerful
  • Queen Kimsong:
  • Exhausted financial resources indulging in luxuries
  • Appointed men she favored into high government positions
  • Over taxed people

  • Makes an alliance with the Chinese T'ang Dynasty
  • Conquered Paekche Kingdom in 660 A.D.
  • Conquered Koguryo in 668 A.D
  • Silla breaks alliance with T'ang Dynasty as they try to settle in conquered lands
  • Silla kicks China out of southern Korean peninsula

Rise of Silla

  • Held a strong maritime trade route with China and Japan
  • Traded ideas and medicine
  • Schooled in mathematics, astronomy and medicine from China
  • Adopted Buddhism
  • Traveled around East Asia learning literature and becoming influenced by other civilizations
  • Southeastern part of Asia
  • Saro tribe leads other tribes in the area of what they called Silla
  • More tribes come together over centuries
  • Silla was established as a city-state
  • Other kingdoms/city-states compete for control of Korean peninsula
