Cain and Abel Allusion

"I was now a killer. I was now as guilty as Cain."(pg.183)

Cain relates back to the bible, he was the first human born and he killed his brother.

By comparing Pi to such a tragic story, it shows the guilt that came with what Pi had to do at sea.

Life of Pi Allusions

Sea Cow Allusion

"'My sweet sea cow!' I exclaimed to the solar still. 'You've produced, and how!'" (pg.187)

In the Hindu religion the cow is a sacred animal. It is a symbol of wealth, and has the status of a caretaker.

Vishnu Allusion

By comparing the fresh water Pi received to the milk, It emphasizes the strength of Pi's religion and how it is always at hand in his mind.

Saint Sebastian

"I felt like the sage Markandeya, who fell out of Vishnu's mouth while Vishnu was sleeping and so beheld the entire universe, everything that there is." (pg. 177)

"Standing unprotected as I was, I felt I was living the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian." (pg.181)

Vishnu is a allusion to the supreme god of valshnavism who is the master of the past, present, and future. Vishnu is the creator and destroyer of all existences.

Saint Sebastian was an early christian Saint and was killed by being shot at, tied to a stake.

in Pi's time of doubt he realizes the importance of his religion and how Vishnu is in control of his future, not himself.

The scenarios in Life of Pi relate to being in a martyrdom and being in an unsafe situation whether it is being on a life boat with Richard Parker constantly being in danger or the danger that the sea will bring.
