The Winner

by Barbara Kimenye

This story is about a poor old man by the name of Pius Ndawula that lives in Africa. Puis has won an American soccer lottery and has became well known to the people around him , including a significant woman by the name of Cousin Sarah. After winning the money, people have statred to be claiming to be his relatives, and they would visit, even some that he has never heard of. Cousin Sarah is one of the characters that was really focused on and raised suspicion by Pius. After people hear that the old man is not winning much money, they decide to leave. At the end of th story Pius marries Cousin Sarah that is later found out to not be related to him at all.

So...

Character

The character of Pius is a calm old man that likes to be self occupied. Pius has had to change his character for the public and to keep himself in line. The character he had to change into was for the reporters and visiters to look at him as a 'cilebrity' like figure.

Atmosphere/Mood

The story has many atmosphere and mood changes. At the start of the story the mood feels very happy because the first sentence starts off with,"When pius Ndwanda won the football pools, overnight he seemed to become the most popular man in Buganda."

A bit more into the story, the happiness begins to raise and overwelm Pius from all of the reorters and the visiting of his greatest friend friend Salongo. The mood is very overwelming to Pius and when reading the atmosphere is the feeling of a new born celebrity because of all of the plublicity he is recieving.

The story then begins to have a negative mood because Pius had to go with a man named Mr. Mukasa to avoid the publicity and this brings more of a crowded feeling to the story.

At last, the story ends with a weight lifted off of Pius' shoulder when he gets informed that he is not winning as much money as he had thought, and the people that were at his house were unformed and had to leave.

Tone

The author had a neutral tone though most of the story. There were very little diverse tones besides when Pius was aggrivated from all of the things going on around him.

Imagery

There was not much strong imagery in the text, but mostly the setting of it was described. The characters were not very described and that gave you your own perspective on what the characters looked like, also there were not too much explination on the setting of where they were, besides Buganda, where they were in africa.

Symbols

some symbols are:

The Money- The money is brought out and represented as greed thet people have for it. The money was the main symbol of the story and it was the cause of the mayhem that happened in Pius' house.

Cousin Sarah- Cousin Sarah is a human symbol for structure. In the story she was the "back bone" to all of Pius' actions and made his next moves without him having an idea why she is sticking around.

Ssabalangira's Tomb- This is a small symbol but it is always refered to when Salongo, Pius' great friend, is mentioned. Pius was to invest in the tomb for Salongo because it is special to him.

Themes

The theme to this story is how a lot of money could not make everyone as happy as they think they would be. Also that with money, comes a lot of responsibility that can be much to handle. The theme of this story is thoughroughly looked at because the whole story is looked on how the money changed everything around Pius.

Structure

Structure:

The structure of the story has a lot of things missing. One thing that was left out of this story was the events before Pius won the pools, the story starts off with him winning the pools with no explanation. Another missing element to the story is the gap when Pius has proposed to Cousin Sarah, but skips to Pius telling Salongo about the marrige.

Although the story has a great structure to it too, like how the events are very common in a situation like Pius'.
