Six Signposts

Again and again

Contrasts and contradictions

Again and again moment

The again and again signpost is a signpost that will show up ,surprise, again and again. It is averagelly a point that the author really wants to get across to you, the reader. It might be a problem the author wants you to focus on or maybe a detail that he/she will want you to remember

Setting

Our Book

Our Example

Plot

Our example

they live in a ghetto area, with run down houses

and the people who line the streets have long

greasy hair, and carry knives in there pockets

just in case is they get jumped. Its a dangerous

neighborhood, were people get stabbed.

church: old, run down, in the middle of know wear on top of a hill, old wood is made out of the church, ciggerette butts line the floor of the old wooden church.

Our example for again and again is that towards the end of the book Jhonny dies and the author constantly put in moments where the characters are remembering him and are sad for him. We chose this because it presses the feeling of sadness onto the reader for Jhonny.

When Ponyboy arrives at home late, Darry slaps him after arguing with him. This is a contrast with how Darry would normally act because it is shown in the book that Darry would normally care for Ponyboy and protect him.

Characters

Definition of contrasts and contradictions

Ponyboy

The outsiders is about a gang of greasers. Two of the greasers (Johnny and Ponyboy) stabbed a man and ran away to an old abandon church on top of a hill. Johnny and Ponyboy were sent to the church by Dally. When everyone was looking for them he came back to the church and it had caught on fire due to a ciggaratte. They rescued all the kids from the church but Johnny and Dally got injured and ended up in the hospital. Dally got out of the hospital alive but Johnny dies. Dally later on got shot by a police and died.

Ponyboy is the main character in The Outsider. Ponyboy is the youngest of three. His parents died when he was eight from a car accident. His oldest bother Darry looks after him and his other other brother Sodapop. Ponyboy is part of a gang, iike his older brothers. Ponyboy was the youngest of his family and the gang. Ponyboy .was one of many greasers but is now a well known hero because he rescued children from a burning church.

Contrasts and contradictions is the first signpost. This is where a character will act differently then what the book has defined them to do. If a character is defined as kind and selfless and acts mean and selfish this is a contrast and contradiction on how they act.

Two-bit

Darry

Darry is Sodapop and Ponyboy's older brother. Darry is a wise man and very strong. Darry looks after Ponyboy and makes sure he gets all his studies done. Darry is one of the leaders of the gang. He is the wisest of the gang.

This is a character who is developed to be a wisecracker. He is a care free character and is also a character who always gets into spats with other people in the book. He is tall and lanky but still has muscle on his body.

Sodapop

Sodapop is Ponyboy's older brother and Darry's younger brother. Sodapop is good looking and all the ladies love him. Sodapop brings peace among the gang and his brothers. Sodapop is in the middle of the gang and doesn' usully get into fights with the socs. Sodapop wanted to marry Sandy but she didn't want to marry him so she moved away. Sodapop ot depressed and started smoking, which sodapop usually doesn't.

Our Example

Dally

Steve

He is a less developed character and is shown more as Sodapops friend. He is also shown to be energetic and always ready for a fight.

Dally is the dark sided character who is always getting into trouble with the law and with other people in the book. Throughout the book it shows that Dally has another side to him, and that this side actually cares about some people, but he will always be a troubled person.

Jhonny

Words of the wiser

This character is the lowest ranking in their gang. He is showed as a sad puppy as he is always beat up at his home his abusive father and his alcoholic mother. He is also shown to be the charity work for the gang as all of them feel that they should protect him.

In our book this is the moment that Darry tells Ponyboy that he has to keep his grades up because he want him to have a better life and also that he has the potential to do it.

Tough questions

The definition of the words of the wiser signpost is where an older or more experienced character will tell a younger or less experienced character somewise words. It doesn't have to be an actual conversation, it can be a letter or a vision if the wiser one is a telekinetic speaker and can speak in his/her mind.

Memory moment

Our Example

Tough questions definition

Our tough question is when Jhonny and Ponyboy are in the church Jhonny is saying that he wasn't sure if he should stay and avoid the cops or if he should be going back to their home town and turn himself into the cops. We supported this choice because it is a tough question that has to be answered by a lengthy response instead of being a yes or no question.

Aha Moment

Memory Moment Definition

The definition for the tough question signpost is tough questions. It basically explains itself. Its a tough question thats usually a rheatorical question that the author wants the reader to think about.

Aha Moment definition

A memory moment is a moment in a book where the character will have a flashback or memory to a time before the present moment in the book a flashback. The moment will always be to a building point in the books plot point and usually involves one of the main characters.

Our Example

The definition of the Aha Moment is where a character finally realizes something in the book. The realization is not as much a eureka moment but is more a realization of another characters feeling. Such as a characters intentions being different than what they've been saying, or love/ hate for another character.

In the beginning of our book there is a moment when Ponyboy is expaining the time that Jhonny was beaten up by a Soc but the reason we picked this is that it uses a flashback to explain this moment and that it is a key point to the rest of the story.

Our example

For our example we have the moment when Ponyboy is in the hospital and Darry and Sodapop run into it. After Sodapop and Ponyboy hug it oout Ponyboy looks at Darry and sees him crying. In this moment Ponyboy realizes that Darry actually loves him and when he got mad would actually have a reason but hidden undernath would be his true feelings.
