Tribute was a very important factor of the Aztec
economic system, and it ensured that there was
a steady flow of goods for the Aztec. Tribute could
be in the form of food, cacoa beans, natural
resources such as lumber, featherwork, or precious
metals.
Aztec marketplaces were places for extra tributes, taxes, and items not wanted by nobles. Because there were no draft animals or wheels as forms of transportation, the Aztec used porters and canoe. The pochteca, who held high positions in society, were somtimes called "spying merchants" because they often travelled to enemy territories and reported back to the emperor.
The Aztec believed they lived for their gods and have to repay the gods for keeping their world balanced by sacrificing humans. Human blood was the most valued, and the Aztec believed without sacrifice, the world would end.
Medicine bundles contained objects such as blessed corn, feathers, rubber, and precious stones that each represented something such as an event. Each altepetl had one. (Health of altepetl)
The Aztec art included books, architecture and featherwork. Books were picture writtings on long papers made of deerskin, cloth, or ornate paper. Temples, that were designed to be step pyramids, were the largest buildings and had beautiful sculptures of gods. Featherwork was more prized than gold.
Every aspect of Aztec life was corrdinated by two
calendars: Xiuhtlapohualli, the main calendar and Tonalpohuallii, the second most important calendar.
