In my research, I was looking to determine whether antibacterial soap or regular soap eliminated more bacterial colonies.
I hypothesized that antibacterial soap would kill 80% more germs than non-antibacterial soap.
In this experiment, antibacterial and non-antibacterial soap will be tested on a household plastic cutting board to determine which clean better.
1. Plastic cutting board was sectioned into three equal sections with masking tape.
2. Antibacterial soap and non-antibacterial soap were lathered onto a plastic cutting board. and rinsed off.
3. Agar plates were scraped by a sterile metal scraper on the cutting board in each spot the soaps were tested, and swabbed it onto the agar plate.
4. Metal scraper placed into a lighter to kill any remaining bacteria in between each swab.
5. Incubate in a warm environment of 38 degrees Celsius for three days.
Everyday, I counted the bacteria colonies with a magnifying glass. This experiment will took a total time amount of three days.
1 Bacterial Incubator
12 Agar Plates
2 Antibacterial soaps (10 mL)
1 Non antibacterial soap (10 mL)
1 Sterile metal scraper
1 Plastic cutting board
1 Masking tape roll
1 Lighter
1 Graduated cylinder
Nature's Sunshine Organic Non-Antibacterial Soap is more effective at eliminating bacterial colonies than Dial Antibacterial Soap and Dawn Antibacterial Soap.
Agar plates need to be prepared carefully and with correct measurements. These steps include proper autoclaving of the agar plates, correct sterilization of instruments, and careful pouring of agar.
Too much moisture can cause bacterial growth to minimize and even stop growth. Not enough humidity can cause bacteria not to grow at all.
Consistency of where the metal scraper was swabbed was very important in this experiment, and could be a possible source of error.
Possible contamination could have occurred if the metal scraper was not in the flame for long enough to kill any remaining bacteria.
Based on the mean and median calculated from the data, Nature's Sunshine Non-Antibacterial Soap is the most effective in eliminating bacterial colonies.
A- Control
B- Dial Soap
C- Dawn Soap
D- Nature's Sunshine
Nature's Sunshine Organic Non-Antibacterial Soap is more effective at eliminating bacterial colonies than Dial Antibacterial Soap and Dawn Antibacterial Soap.
The independent variables were the antibacterial hand soaps and the non-antibacterial hand soap.
The qualitative dependent variable was the amount of bacteria killed.
The quantitative dependent variable was counting bacterial colonies with a magnifying glass.
Control Group: Cutting board section without soap
Experimental Groups:
Antibacterial soaps
Non-antibacterial soap
No soap
