• On Aug. 20, 1998, the United States launched cruise missiles that destroyed a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Khartoum which allegedly manufactured chemical weapons. The U.S. contended that the Sudanese factory was financed by Islamic militant Osama bin Laden.

• One of Sudan's most famous sons is the NBA basketballer Manute Bol who starred in the NBA between 1985 and 1995, during which time he was the tallest person to star in the NBA at seven foot seven inches.

• Sudan is in Africa, south of Egypt.
• It shares borders with Egypt, Libya, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
