34% of children entering kindergarten lack the basic language skills needed to learn how to read.
The U.S. Department of Education found that, generally, the more students read for fun on their own time, the higher their reading scores.
Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare.

What is
One basic idea is that reading consists of two parts. One is recognizing the words on the page, the other is understanding those words once you have recognized them.
Why work on decoding?
Decoding is the process of translating print into speech by rapidly matching a letter or combination of letters (graphemes) to their sounds (phonemes) and recognizing the patterns that make syllables and words

Why doesn't it always work? Why can't we just teach "phonics" to get kids to read?
Our goal is to get students to process words automatically and rapidly so they can focus on comprehension.

Why do we need to cover Phonological Awareness and Phonemic Awareness?
What later literacy skills come from "rhyming??
Rhyming teaches how language works. It helps them notice and work with sounds in words.
Rhyme help children experience the rhythm of language. As they recite the nursery rhyme, they learn to speak with animated voices. This leads to reading with expression later on.
When children are familiar with rhyme or a rhyming book, they learn to anticipate the rhyming word. This prepares them to make predictions when they read, another important reading skill.
Rhyming is important for writing too. It can help children understand that words that share common sounds share common letters.
When listening to rhyming songs and poems, children create a mental picture. This is crucial in later reading comprehension strategies.
Because rhyming is fun, it adds joy to the sometimes daunting task of learning to read.
