I graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Elementary Education. I long-term subbed in a fifth grade classroom for half a year, and then was hired full time at a charter school in Lansing. I taught all subjects, including art, gym, and music. I taught fifth grade there for five years. I currently teach fifth grade in Holt. Holt is the second largest district in the area, behind the Lansing School District. I now teach only two subjects - language arts and social studies. This will be my second year teaching here.
Hi! I grew up in Haslett, a small town just outside of Lansing. My mother is a 3rd grade teacher and my father is a retired police officer. I have a younger brother who has a daughter going into third grade. I live down the street from my grandmother, and spend a lot of time taking care of her. I played hockey my entire life. I also have a dog I adopted from the humane society named Dexter. After high school, I coached varsity hockey for ten years. I currently live in Lansing. My favorite activities are reading, running, traveling, gardening, and teaching.
First and foremost, I am a literacy teacher. My classroom has over two thousand books in it, and I focus heavily on authentic reading and active reading strategies. I find that as soon as I conquer one challenge, two more arise. This is my third class in the last year, all focusing on helping struggling readers. Here are some of the biggest challenges I face:
Hugely varied ability levels
Lack of any curriculum
Limited or shared resources
Limited time (85 minute block for all literacy)
I am hoping to learn skills and strategies to help struggling readers and writers. I am also hoping to find and master some research-based interventions to help struggling readers and writers. I want to see how my current classroom practices can have new researched-based skills added to them to be more efficient for struggling readers and writers. I am really hoping to find practices the will help my students reach their ultimate potential.
I have taught fifth grade for six years. During that time, I have taught many struggling readers. Last year, I had five students in fifth grade who were reading below a second grade level. This year, I have two students who do not speak any English (and, unfortunately, they speak different languages.) Last year I had nine different languages spoken by students in my class. I will also have four students who recently finished phonics programs.
