What does summer symbolize for Alvarez?

For Alvarez it symbolizes freedom because she has never had a "free "summer before and the summer that she has is more than she expected to have.

Why do you think Alvarez titled her essay "My First Free Summer"?

The U.S. flag is the physical picture, and learning about American history is something that symbolizes becoming an American too.

We think that Alvarez's parents didn't tell their kids because, the kids could spread around the news. If the kids were to spread around the news then the father could get caught.

We think that it was literally her first free summer because she had had summer school when she was in first to fourth grade and it was her first summer without summer school. Figuratively because that was the year she went to the "Land of the Free".
