He urged African-Americans to be proud of their race and to return to Africa.

In 1922, Garvey was arrested for mail fraud in connection with the sale of stock in the Black Star line.

After Marcus Harvey died he became Jamaica's first national hero.

The Harlem Renaissance was cultural movement that spanned the 1920's. At the time, it was known as the "New Negro Movement". The Harlem Renaissance is generally considered to have spanned from 1919 to the mid 1930's. Many ideas lived on much longer. The Harlem Renaissance was the period in which the African-American achievements of art, music and literature flourished

Marcus Garvey was a Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur and orator who helped find the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements.

Black urban migration combined with trends in American society as a whole during the 1920's. The rise of racial black intellectuals all contributed to the particular styles and success of black artists during this time period.

With the Renaissance in full swing, jazz became the "people's" music despite some trouble in being accepted by the black "cultural elite"

This movement was an unprecedented outburst among black writers and their creative activity. Their literary arts were due to their efforts of writing and their heritage. They would use their unique culture as a means toward re-defining African-American expression.
